In this article, I show how much it realistically costs to launch and run an online store in 2026. We go through domain and hosting costs, platform selection (SaaS vs open-source vs dedicated), and then the most important: ongoing maintenance costs - SEO, advertising, payments, logistics, returns, customer service and technical maintenance. At the end you get budget forks and tips on how to launch smart (MVP) without burning through money.
The audio version is intentionally a more elaborate, "narrated" version of the written text - I added short comments and explanations to make it easier to absorb the information without looking at tables and cost forks.
Setting up an online store is one of the most commonly considered options by entrepreneurs in the2025 - and still in 2026. On the one hand - the promise of unlimited access to customers, scalability and profits, on the other - the need for an investment, the amount of which is often a mystery to novice business owners.
I remember a conversation with a client who wanted to get into e-commerce, but didn't know where to start. He had a great idea, but was intimidated by the various technology options and unclear costs. "How much does it all cost?" - this question kept coming back like a boomerang. In this article, we'll break down the topic so you can make an informed decision and plan a budget for your own online store.
Important Note
in this material I give forks and examples, but in e-commerce the "real" cost is often done not by the tools themselves, but by the processes: payments, logistics, customer service, marketing and technical maintenance. Therefore, in addition to the start-up cost, I will also show what most often generates recurring expenses once the store is launched.
Creating an online store is not just about choosing a platform - it's also about deciding on a domain, hosting, graphic design and integration with payment systems and logistics.
Without a domain and hosting, there is no store. A domain is your online address, and hosting is where the store "lives." Here are sample costs in 2025/2026:
| Element | Estimated cost | Comments |
|---|---|---|
.PL domain (registration) | PLN 5-20 (promotional price of the first year) | The promotional price depends on the registrar; the standard is sometimes higher. |
.PL domain (renewal) | PLN 50-200/year | The spreads are large because some companies raise the renewal price heavily; the minimum cost on the registry side is a different amount than the retail price at the registrar. |
.COM domain | PLN 40-50 (registration) | Usually approx.$10-25/year (Conversion depends on the exchange rate and registrar). |
Domain.com (renewal) | PLN 50-200 / year | Mostly more expensive than registration; some registrars have an attractive first year and more expensive renewal. |
WooCommerce Hosting | 50-300 PLN / month. (typically) 300-1000+ zloty / month. (more traffic) | In practice, the cost depends on traffic, number of products, integration and performance requirements. |
PrestaShop Hosting | 80-500 PLN / month. (typically) 500-1500+ PLN / month. (more traffic) | Presta often requires a more "meaty" server than simple WordPress, especially with extensive modules. |
SSL Certificate | PLN 0 (Let's Encrypt) 150-1000 zloty / year (paid) | Free SSL is the standard for most deployments; paid certificates make sense mainly for specific business requirements. |
The choice of platform has a huge impact on the cost. You can bet on off-the-shelf solutionsSaaS (subscription), such as Shopify or Shoper, oropen-source (e.g., WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart), which are "free to start" but require hosting, implementation and maintenance.
In practice, what matters most is not just "how much the platform costs," but how much the entire ecosystem costs: payments, integrations (courier/ERP/marketplace), applications/modules, marketing and technical maintenance.
Platform | Cost (approximate) | Comments |
|---|---|---|
Shopify (SaaS) | Basic: €19 / month. with annual settlement (also visible on the site as €27 as annual price without promotion) + transaction commissions | In addition, there are payment fees: for example, from1.95% + PLN 1.20 online (startup) andsurcharge for external payment provider (if you don't use Shopify Payments). |
Shoper (SaaS, PL) | Standard/Standard+: PLN 249 net/month. (after the 1st year) Premium: from 599 PLN net / month. (after the 1st year) | In SaaShosting you have in your subscription, but you still pay for the domain, integrations and marketing. |
Wix (SaaS) | E-commerce plans usually fromCore (~$29/month/year) toBusiness (~$39/month/year) | Pricing and plan names can vary by country/billing; consider this as a reference. |
Ecwid (SaaS / "store as a module") | Venture: 25 € / month. -Business: 45 € / month. -Unlimited: 105 € / month. | Ecwid often wins if the store is to beaddition to an existing site (e.g., corporate). The settlement currency depends on the country. |
WooCommerce (open-source) | The plugin itself free, but paid add-ons and hosting | Individual plugs often costfrom a few tens of zlotys up, and more elaborate integrations can costhundreds-thousands of zlotys a year. |
PrestaShop (open-source) | Free engine, but paid modules and hosting | The modules sometimes range from ca.41,99 € up to6999,99 € (with very elaborate solutions). |
Quick Selection Rule:
The choice of hosting depends on the e-commerce platform and the expected number of visitors (traffic), the number of products, integrations and whether the store has to "pull" advertising campaigns without performance drops.
Type of hosting | Estimated cost | For whom / comments |
|---|---|---|
Shared hosting (for small stores) | 300 - 1500 PLN / year | The cheapest option, but with increasing traffic it can quickly become a bottleneck. |
VPS hosting (for medium-sized stores) | 150 - 1500 PLN / month. | Gives greater control and efficiency; often the "golden mean" for growing stores. |
Dedicated server (for large stores) | 500 - 5000 PLN / month. | When traffic, integrations and performance requirements are high or you need custom infrastructure. |
Cloud (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) | from 200 PLN / month. (in practice, often500-3000+ PLN / month.) | The cost depends on resource consumption and architecture; the upside is scaling, the downside is that it is easy to "burn through" the budget without control. |
If you want a fully customized store (dedicated solution), you can have it built by an agency or developer. The cost depends on the scope: from a simple MVP to a complex system with integrations and automations.
Store customization | Cost |
|---|---|
Programmer's rates | 120 - 300+ zlotys / hour. (depending on experience and technology) |
Comprehensive implementation | 20,000 - 150,000+ zlotys (simple store vs. complex integrations, UX, automation, multilingual, B2B) |
Even the best hosting is no substitute for updates, backups, monitoring and rapid response to failures. With open-source, it's worth assuming a fixed budget for maintenance (updates, patches after plugin/module updates, security). This is a cost that doesn't "sell", but protects you from downtime and lost sales. The cost is about 300-1500 PLN/month for a small store.
In practice, the cost of living is divided into 3 baskets:
It is the last two baskets that are most often overlooked in a startup budget.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the key elements of a long-term e-commerce strategy. Without it, even the best-designed store will not bring traffic and customers.
SEO service | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
Basic SEO audit | 800 - 3000 PLN (one time) |
Advanced SEO audit | 3,000 - 10,000 PLN (one time) |
Monthly SEO service (small store) | 1,500 - 4,000 PLN/month. |
Monthly SEO service (medium store) | 4,000 - 10,000 PLN/month. |
Monthly SEO service (large e-commerce) | 10,000 - 30,000 PLN/month. |
SEO technical optimization | 1000 - 5000 PLN (one time, depending on the scope) |
Content marketing (articles, company blog) | 200 - 800 zloty per article (depending on length and research) |
Link building | PLN 50 - 500 per link (depending on quality) |
Subscription to SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, etc.). | 500 - 2,500 PLN/month. (depending on the plan and exchange rate) |
In SEO, it's worth separating two things:the cost of "setting the foundations" (audit + technical fixes + category/product order) andcost of "delivery" (content, linking, constant optimization). For most stores, it's better to do the foundation decently first, and then pump the budget into content and links.
These are costs that increase with the number of orders - and often eat up margin if you don't count them beforehand.
Area | What goes into the cost | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
Payments | Operator commissions, chargebacks, handling of payment refunds | usually% per transaction + fixed charges, if any |
Logistics | courier integrations, labels, automation, fulfillment | fromseveral tens of zlotys/month. toseveral thousand zlotys/month. |
Returns and complaints | process, return labels, service time, notification system | depending on volume |
Customer service | Helpdesk/chat, automation, employee time | fromPLN 0 (to start "manually") toseveral thousand zlotys/month. |
In SaaS (e.g. Shopify/Shoper) and with some payment gateways, there may also be additional fees depending on the payment configuration. Therefore, when planning your budget, always include "cost per order," not just subscription.
If you're investing in SEO and advertising, you need to have the correct measurement: GA4/Tag Manager, e-commerce events, conversions, and in the EU, also the consent mechanism (CMP) and Consent Mode setup. Without this, data is incomplete, campaigns are harder to optimize, and ad budgets are more likely to "run away" without a clear return.
Cost: From a few hundred zloty at a time (simple setup) to several thousand zloty (full tracking, events, attribution, integrations).
Even the best SEO needs the support of paid advertising. Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram) are some of the most popular options for online store owners.
If you're just starting out, you don't need to invest tens of thousands of zlotys right away. Key tips:
The total cost of a store depends on many factors. If you want to start an online business, you should prepare to spend on the order of:
The cost of living?
Usually800-1500 PLN/month. (minimal maintenance + basic tools), but with active marketing and a growing store realistically3,000 - 20,000+ zlotys/month.
E-commerce in 2026 presents huge opportunities, but also competition. It's worth approaching the subject strategically and investing where it really pays off.
